FOUNDER’S MESSAGE
Washington DC – 1 September 2007 - As of September 2007, IAPC has achieved all goals set forth by our founding Board of Directors, along with my own initial objectives in establishing this organization.
Through the development and public offerings of executive education conferences and the generous dissemination of information regarding university-level programs, international standards, and professional certification in protocol, IAPC has served the interested public and thousands of global professionals who are experienced producers and/or directors of events involving world leaders, heads of state, foreign dignitaries, and corporate executives. Some have worked directly with United States Presidents, White House officials, the U.S. State Department, and other countries’ government representatives.
Today, our most dedicated founding members and authorized instructors are under contract to either teach at the university-level or author separate protocol and etiquette works and industry related materials. In addition, key IAPC officers have developed, together with industry icons, advanced programs in protocol and civility, leadership training, and SMART manners. These programs are requested by universities and private businesses, including members of Fortune 50, Fortune 100, and Fortune 500 Global corporations.
As we predicted and promoted, IAPC is pleased to see the significant increase in university and college degree programs in our discipline becoming the preferred means for acquiring foundational education in protocol, etiquette, and civility. We will continue to report our findings, such as --- in today’s marketplace employers prefer hiring professionals with a Bachelor’s degree or higher and for individuals entering the field of protocol --- their education should also include university-level program(s) in international relations, diplomacy, foreign languages, world history, or related areas.
I wish to thank the many individuals, companies, and organizations who have stepped forward, sponsored, volunteered and/or participated in industry specific research to help establish IAPC as an international resource for Academia, Executives, Members of Fortune 50, Fortune 100, and Fortune Global 500 Companies, Corporations/Organizations, Government, and National/International Media seeking reliable information on Protocol, Etiquette, and Civility. See Thank You
I am pleased to announce that I have become a managing partner in a Washington-based consulting and executive coaching firm, Baldrige & Lewris. Working with famous author Letitia Baldrige, an acknowledged international expert on manners, protocol, and the "human side of business" is a joy that brings a new dimension to my career in this industry. Please read her biography at www.BaldrigeLewris.com, and the reasons for my enthusiasm for this joint venture will become very clear.
With much appreciation, Alinda Lewris, Founder 2002 - 2007 IAPC President and Chief Executive Officer

United States Department of Defense (DOD) Protocol Trainers First To Qualify for Premier Credential
Washington, DC – 18 October 2006 - As a third-party, standard setting, nonprofit organization, the International Association of Protocol Consultants (IAPC)® takes great pleasure in announcing the first recipients of the prestigious designation Certified Protocol Officer, CPO®: Ms. Teresa Babb and Ms. Anna Hart.
Teresa Babb is the Program Manager of the Defense Attaché Spouse Training Program at the Joint Military Attaché School (JMAS), Defense Intelligence Agency in Washington, DC. She helps train DOD and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officers, noncommissioned officers, civilian personnel, and their spouses selected for duty at United States embassies worldwide. Since 2000 her thrice yearly twelve-week program has incorporated protocol, etiquette, civility, and cross-cultural information for the express purpose of improving the lives of military diplomats. The public nature of embassy assignments requires extensive preparation for success.
Anna Hart has been the Social Director and Protocol Adviser to the Brigade of Midshipmen and Protocol Adviser to the Commandant, at the United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland since 2003. She is the first to develop and present a four-year officership training program in protocol, etiquette, and civility for a student population of 4,000 Midshipmen. Her programs prepare Midshipmen to represent the Academy today and to be respected as future officers, as well as “ladies and gentlemen.” Hart enjoys lecturing and interacting with civilian college-age people also. She designed a model formal dining practicum for The University of Maryland Alumni Association, Student Programs and Advocacy (professional development program for Juniors and Seniors) which she has been delivering as a guest lecturer for more than a decade.
Both Hart and Babb have been recruited for the IAPC Board of Advisors. “Certification credentials fulfill a long-standing need for competency recognition in our career field,” says Cherlynn Conetsco, Chair, IAPC Education and Certification Council. “Serious industry professionals, including those with the federal government, know the importance of an independently evaluated and documented portfolio. CPOs meet rigorous eligibility requirements, sign a code of ethics, adhere to best international practices, and commit to continuous education.”
In order to provide an incentive for recruiting and retention of civilians, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2002 in Section 5757, Title 5, United States Code, authorizes expenses to obtain professional credentials to be paid for both appropriated and non appropriated fund employees. This policy also permits agencies to pay expenses for employees to obtain and renew professional credentials, including expenses for professional accreditation, certification, and such additional expenses as membership fees, registration fees, travel and per diem costs. DoD’s dedication to such assessments is indicated by the recent change to Title 10 of the US Code to permit the Services to use appropriated funds to pay for commercial credentials for their personnel.
IAPC was founded in 2002 as the all-inclusive promoter of active protocol professionals in corporate, diplomatic, government, or military arenas at the local, national, and international levels. Forni (Professor, Johns Hopkins University) lectured on the surprising cost of incivility.
The memorable event included a very special evening reception to honor “America’s leading arbiter of manners.” Ms. Letitia Baldrige is the 2005 IAPC Outstanding Achievement Award recipient. Her remarks, Protocol Pufferies and Etiquette Exigencies, drew on her invaluable life experiences as a global expert in the field. As author of 21 books, including her most recent best seller, New Manners for New Times: A Complete Guide to Etiquette, Ms. Baldrige provided a fresh perspective on maintaining decorum and a high quality lifestyle in today’s exceedingly high tech world.
During the reception, Ms. Patricia Sanders (Director, Marketing Communications for BAE Systems) was recognized for her role as Chairman of IAPC’s outstanding inaugural conference and Ms. Mary E. Power (President, Convention Industry Council) commended IAPC for its dedication to continued education. Ms. Power thanked IAPC principals for their contribution to the industry by authoring Chapter 18: International Protocol, for the 1st Edition of the Convention Industry Council (CIC) International Manual, released in June 2005. Ms. Power remarked: As meetings expand globally, protocol is becoming a key element to every successful event. The afternoon educational offering began with Mr. Hutchinson speaking on Protocol and the U.S. Supreme Court. He delivered keen insight into the historical basis for many traditions from the use of quill pens and the ordered seating of Justices within the courtroom, to their nomination and succession processes. He reiterated the honor due the judicial branch of the U.S. government. Mr. Hutchinson worked at the U.S. Supreme Court for 24 years in various positions, including Assistant Marshal. He later served as the first Clerk of the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and continued in that capacity until his retirement after 47 years in public service.
The Keynote Speaker was Dr. Forni, cofounder of the Johns Hopkins Civility Project. Dr. Forni, a professor at Johns Hopkins University, spoke on Relational Competence in the Workplace: The High Road and the Bottom Line. He defined civility as a respectful “form of benevolent awareness of those around us.” He strongly believes that “soft” skills such as courtesy and consideration are fundamental for our personal success, health, and well-being. Dr. Forni pointed out economic benefits as well. With reference to the rising cost of employee healthcare, retention, and recruitment, he observed that the promotion of relational competence in the workplace is a rational answer. He cited a 1992 United Nations Report that labels job stress “the 20th Century Disease” and a report by The American Institute of Stress that shows job stress as very costly, “with the price tag for U.S. industry estimated at over $300 billion annually.” Dr. Forni presented a compelling case for civil society, deeming being crucial to the well being the individual as well as the community. Citing ongoing medical studies and emerging research that identifies the detrimental physical consequences of stress and anger, he maintained that “being good is good for you, better relationships lower our levels of stress.”
